David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson kiss, sing, toy with our feelings in surprise X-Files reunion

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson treated fans to what we can only hope is a preview of the upcoming X-Files revival on Tuesday night. Performing songs from his new album Hell or Highwaterat The Cutting Room in New York, Duchovny was joined onstage by his once and future Scully, who stopped for a quick kiss as she made her way to the mic.

“Can we play some real music, please?” Anderson asked.

The two proceeded to sing and dance their way through a cover of Neil Young’s “Helpless,” whispering and exchanging a fist bump after the first chorus. When the song ended, Anderson and Duchovny shared another kiss before she left the stage.

Duchovny later called Anderson—and former Californication daughter Madeleine Martin—back to close the night with a rendition of Sly & the Family Stone’s “Thank You.” This time, Anderson brought a tambourine, making Duchovny’s comment in a recent interview with Esquire seem suspiciously prescient: “So we’ll put together an X-Files band. I don’t know if Gillian plays an instrument, I’ve never seen her play an instrument. I’m sure she can shake a tambourine if she wants to and sing with me.”

It looks like she wanted to. And if they want to do it again—say, for all six hours of the X-Files revival—we wouldn’t be opposed.
