'X-Files' stars David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson tease third film at reunion

"X-Files" fans hoping for another movie sequel heard some good news at Thursday's 20th anniversary panel at Comic-Con.

Sort of.

Star David Duchovny, who played Agent Fox Mulder, said because the groundbreaking sci-fi series offered endless possibilities, "We could do it forever. I always thought when we can come back together, we will. As much as we can."

Gillian Anderson, who portrayed Mulder's initially skeptical partner Dana Scully, is game as long as their reunion doesn't happen on the small screen. "A film would be great."

Creator Chris Carter fell just short of confirming a third movie for the beloved franchise, but he said the devotion of Comic-Con's fans was "very inspirational."

"You need a reason to get excited about going on and doing it again, because it's hard, hard work. But this is very interesting," he said.

As far as the actors are concerned, production on the film began today after Anderson auctioned off a life-size cutout of Mulder and Scully to the audience for charity.

"This is how we're going to get the movie made, by the way," cracked Duchovny.

"This is our Kickstarter," responded Anderson.

The actress flirted with her co-star throughout the panel, expressing her eagerness to share a sex scene with his promiscuous character on "Californication."

"I didn't realize that Mulder was so cool until a few years later. And then I thought, 'Damn, I should've gotten there sooner," she said.

Duchovny, however, is more reluctant for the two to reteam in other roles.

"Sacred's a strong word," he said, "but there's something so special about Mulder and Scully ... it would have to be something that wouldn't cross the line between those two characters."

For the show's creator, the will-they-or-won't-they couple fell in love at first sight.

"I think it was when (Scully) first walked in (Mulder's) office in the basement," responded Carter when asked about the origins of the team's epic romance.

To the delight of fans, the product of their coupling made a surprise appearance: Producer John Shiban's son, who played Scully's baby as a newborn, appeared on stage at the urging of his dad.

"He looks like me," Anderson said, turning to Duchovny and saying, "That's our son."
