Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny On Being Mulder & Scully Forever, 'Ludicrous' 'X-Files' Cases

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have played many roles in their post-"X-Files" careers, but they'll forever be known by two names: Mulder and Scully.

It's been 20 years since "The X-Files" premiered, changing the landscape of TV forever. The supernatural drama about two FBI agents who fought against government conspiracies while trying to explain the unexplained is as relevant today is it was in 1993.

The duo reunited for "The Truth Is Here: David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson on 'The X-Files'" at The Paley Center for Media in New York on Saturday, Oct. 12 and weren't shy about wanting to return to the franchise.

"Gillian and I want to do it, so it's really up to Twentieth Century Fox at this point," Duchovny told the Associated Press about a third movie on the red carpet of Paley Center event.

The following brief conversation also took place on the red carpet.

I saw you Reddit AMA and everyone was asking questions about what they wanted to know about the show. But I want to know what do you want fans to know about your time the show or its impact?
Gillian: I don't know whether there's anything that we haven't talked about, seriously. I know often when we do these things -- I've done quite a lot panels recently because I've been doing Comic Cons for the last year, I know that every answer I give is exactly the same answer I gave last time somebody asked the same question. So, I'm not sure if I have any insight for you.
David: I think I can probably speak for Gillian. I think we were both actors that go to work and actually try and do good work every day. I don't think either one of us ever showed up and just kind of said, "F--- it, it's just a TV show" ... so I think we were always working hard, you know trying to do the best that we could and trying to grow. I think that we did.
Gillian: Yeah.

Do you think there was one defining moment for the show?
Gillian: There was certainly a moment where all of a sudden I realized it was bigger than I anticipated it being. I think that was probably around ...
David: Third year?
Gillian: The third year, yeah. I think it was sort of when we really hit our stride with it and I certainly felt more comfortable during that third time in character.

Fifty years from now, would you be OK with still being known as Mulder and Scully?
David: It happens, it still happens. When it first starts to happen -- again, I don't want to speak for Gillian, but I think she agrees -- you kind of chafe against it because you want to say, "I can do other things."
Gillian: Mhm.
David: And then you go and do other things and you've shown that and it's not a big deal anymore. You're more comfortable in who you are and what you do and then it's just kind of sweet. It's only when they call me Scully that I get upset.

I know you have favorite episodes, but was there one case that you thought was just so absurd? You know, there were killer bees ...
David: Killer cats.
Gillian: That's one of the things we talked about on Reddit today, the killer cat episode, which was about as ludicrous as you can get.
