X-Files Alum Frank Spotnitz Talks About His Sleek and Sexy New Spy Thriller, Hunted

Full disclosure: We’re big fans of Frank Spotnitz. After all, he spent years as a writer and executive producer on the iconic ‘90s sci-fi droolfest The X-Files and rebooted the creepier-than-creepy thriller Night Stalker for ABC. Though Night Stalker was never really given a proper shot (marketing and time-slot issues), it made for some compelling TV. So imagine our delight when we discovered that Spotnitz was back developing a kick-ass spy thriller called Hunted, starring the lovely Melissa George and airing on Cinemax (go figure!)—did we mention it’s written and set in the U.K.? Snakkle was lucky enough to speak to Spotnitz while he was in town for the Television Critics Association press tour and asked him about working in the U.K. TV system, the genesis of Hunted, casting Melissa George (Alias baddie!), and, of course, his thoughts on a third X-Files movie.

Snakkle: Tell me about the genesis for Hunted and how quickly after the second X-Files movie (released in 2008) did you have this idea bumping around in your brain? Frank Spotnitz: I was invited to the U.K. to speak in 2009, and that’s when I thought about going over there to do a show. And I called Kudos [Film and Television], and I called Stephen Garrett and Jane Featherstone, because they’d been talking to me for seven years at that point about coming to London to do a show. I always wanted to go to London. I could see how the business was changing, and I thought ther ... [Continua a leggere]

Hunted on HBO is real international espionage

To find the last time there was a successful, truly international TV espionage drama, you’d have to go all the way back to I Spy. There was a failed attempt last year, with the Ashley Judd spy series Missing, but that did not survive its first season. And now there is Hunted, a globe-spanning espionage thriller based in London and actually shot in the cities in which it is set. It debuts on HBO Canada Friday night. “We wanted it to be cinematic and that meant really going to the locations,” says series creator Frank Spotnitz, former producer on The X-Files. “Really ... Ricordate la protagonista femminile della serie tv-cult del paranormale ''X-Files''? Dana Scully, ovvero l'attrice Gillian Anderson, era presente alla premiere del film diretto da Mike Newell e tratto dal romanzo di Charles Dickens dal titolo ''Great Expectations''. Non ci ricordavamo di una Scully così attraente: infatti la Anderson è apparsa in forma più che mai e si è anche soffermata più volte a scherzare con i suoi fans, mostrando molta disponibilità. Agent Scully has never looked so good. The X-Files actress Gillian Anderson wowed in a sexy black gown on the red carpet for the Great Expectations premiere during the 2012 RomaFictionFest in Rome, Italy on Oct. 1. Anderson’s black maxi dress featured orange and teal striped straps and a coordinating belly band that created a flattering maxi silhouette and drew even more attention to her decolletage, not that she needed the help. A plunging neckline that left very little to the imagination had all eyes focused on the newly-blond star. The 44-year-old star doesn’t appear to have ... [Continua a leggere]

The downside: The project isn't currently set up at any network in the United States.Carter's show is called "The After," and it's described as a thriller that takes place in the aftermath of a mysterious and unexplained happening. It will incorporate "elements of science fiction, suspense, and real-world fear and paranoia," according to the press release announcing the project. In other words, it doesn't sound as if Carter is straying too far from his "X-Files" wheelhouse. "The After" comes from independent producer Georgeville Television, which is also behind NBC's upcoming pirate series "Cro ... [Continua a leggere]

Showrunners 2012: 'Breaking Bad's' Vince Gilligan

"I prefer to stay out of money and scheduling issues, though it is to my detriment and I know that. I remember when somebody first told me that you’re now in charge of a $40 million start-up, it kind of freaked me out," he says of jobs he'd like to delegate.

From their obsessive rituals (Peppermint Patties! Oatmeal! Bruce Springsteen!) to the parts of their jobs they hate most (killing characters off, dealing with agents), TV's most influential writer-producers featured on The Hollywood Reporter's annual list of the Top 50 Showrunners come clean about the people, things and quirky habits that keep them -- and their shows -- alive. Vince Gilligan, Breaking Bad (AMC) The show that inspired me to write: Gilligan: The Twilight Zone because it was so marvelously constructed.

[Continua a leggere]
